Sidewalk Chalk

Before your child can write his/her name or the A-B-Cs, he/she will need to build up strength and control in their fingers and hand. The way we hold a pen or pencil to write requires us to be able to perform the pincer grasp- the ability to pick up a small object with the forefinger and thumb. As parents, we can provide many opportunities for our children to practice the pincer grasp through scribbling and drawing. Have you tried chalk yet with your child? Sidewalk chalk is a good tool for our little ones. Because of its thickness, it makes it easier for them to hold and handle. Also, making markings with chalk requires a good amount of pressure from children which will help with their developing muscles.
-Trace each other's body outline, foot and hand outline on pavement.
-Try chalk on black paper, blackboard, or canvas.
-Wet the chalk. Try wetting the chalk for a different chalk effect. Wetting chalk also reduces the amount of pressure needed to draw and scribble with chalk.
-Trace lines on the pavement, draw shapes or colour a mosaic together.
